The AIADMK government is geared to implement the scheme of distributing freebies as announced in their election manifesto. Elaborate arrangements are being made at huge costs to conduct special functions (being the first after the election) to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, ministers, and MLAs in Chennai and several centres in the State.
I am reminded of one of the Tamil stories of Paramartha Guru and his disciples written by the great missionary Father Beschi (Veeramamunivar)
The Guru sends his disciples to get a needle. After getting the needle, the disciples decided that all the five of them should carry the needle. So they brought a long trunk of a palm tree and pinned the needle on it and carried the trunk. When they reached the guru, the needle was not there but only the palm trunk.
If the ‘size of the needle’ represents the cost involved for the supply of freebies, the ‘size of the palm trunk’ would represent the cost spent on the glittering functions. Hope the story will not be carried to its absurd length. Unlike the needle that had not reached the Guru, let at least the freebies reach those to whom they are meant for.
It will be wise if the government does not indulge in such extravaganzas. In fact the government can boldly abolish all freebies and utilise the money in creating earning opportunities for the poor.
